Backwater Valve
A backwater valve is installed directly on your main sewer line. When city sewers back up during heavy rain, the valve's flap automatically closes — blocking sewage from entering your home through floor drains, toilets, or sinks.
Under normal conditions the valve stays open, allowing water to flow out freely. When city sewer pressure reverses, the internal flap gate shuts automatically. Once the surge passes, it reopens on its own — no power, no buttons, no action required.
